Summary
Earth has entered the last decade of the 21st century during an unprecedented era of global peace and prosperity. The nations of the world have formed an unwritten, undeclared worldwide alliance towards progress, as the world government, symbolized by the Earth Senate, enters its second generation of existence.
Territorial conflicts remain, as American states broke away and declared their independence in the nation's second civil war, only muted by indefinite cease-fire, and warring factions across Africa still threaten the uneasy calm in the continent's more modernized and wealthier cities. Australia is coming out of a long and contentious Green Era, the environmentalist reformation in response to the global warming that destroyed its coastal cities half a century ago. The old European Union, after a century of continental unity, collapsed under the weight of nationalism and multi-cultural tensions.
Yet, the mistakes made in the early- and mid-21st century paved the way for changes that swept across the globe, almost without resistance. Seemingly overnight, as the people of Earth faced their own mortality under the threat of dwindling resources, overpopulation and civil unrest, the world banded together to form one last attempt at its own preservation.
A generation later, Earth seems to have found its footing again, after arguably fifty years of dark and desperate times. New technologies led to a greater quality of life with far less impact on the environment. Global communication and transportation greatly diminished the effect of national boundaries and territorial disputes. The reach of mankind has even extended into space, with thriving colonies on the moon and Mars. As the world becomes smaller while the universe opens up, self-determination and freedom have become the increasingly dominant themes in the global golden age.
Yet, historians note that the old arguments between and within nations were only postponed, unsettled, in favor of the push for prosperity. As the two dominant political parties around the world, the Progressive Party and the Foundationalist Party, become more polarized and give way to increasingly tense debate, a small but growing trend towards democratically-mandated authoritarianism has planted itself in the political discussions among both parties, and in the social fabric of the world populace. It has no name or definition, as it has expressed itself differently among the still various cultures of the world. Yet, as technology binds Earth towards progress, Earth may find itself rushing headlong into tyranny for the sake of humanity's lasting impact on the universe.
All this, NewsNetLink will cover.
In the wake of the Green Era, only one 24-hour news network backed by the megacorporation Fairmont Media survived the economic and environmental reforms earlier in the century, and emerged as the one international source of information that the people of the world could rely on. Without much effort on its own part, NewsNetLink saw its competition die and its access to the capitals of the world reach unprecedented heights. Forty years after its founding, it is now charged with the responsibility of informing every corner of the world of the events of the day.
Now, as a global cast and crew of journalists, analysts and technicians finds itself connecting pieces of a larger puzzle whose meaning could have significant effects on the history of the world, the network finds itself in a conflict between merely reporting the news and exposing the truth when no one else can.
